This journey has transformed computing from a niche field into a driving force for global innovation, impacting science, industry, and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s retrace the main stages in the history of computing, trying to predict what the future may hold for us.<\/p>\n<h4>ENIAC: the dawn of the computing era<\/h4>\n<p><strong>In 1946, the world witnessed the birth of ENIAC<\/strong> (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), <strong>the first programmable electronic computer in history<\/strong>. Created in the United States for military purposes, it was capable of performing complex calculations, making ballistic computations for artillery much faster. ENIAC was an enormous machine, occupying a space of over 1,500 square feet and weighing more than 30 tons. With over 17,000 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, and thousands of switches, it could process around 5,000 operations per second. Although rudimentary by today\u2019s standards, ENIAC represented a monumental leap forward.<\/p>\n<h4>The arrival of transistor computers: an epochal change<\/h4>\n<p><strong>In the 1950s, transistors replaced vacuum tubes, paving the way for second-generation computers<\/strong>. Supercomputers like Summit, developed by IBM, and the Japanese Fugaku, are used for tasks that require immense power, such as climate modeling, genetic research, or particle physics.<\/p>\n<p>These machines are crucial for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the development of new technologies, from self-driving cars to advanced predictive models. The massive data processing and the ability to simulate complex scenarios in short times make supercomputers an essential tool for modern science.<\/p>\n<h4>The future of computing: quantum computing and AI<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Looking to the future, two technologies promise to once again revolutionize the world of computing: quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI).<\/strong> Quantum computing, based on the principles of quantum mechanics, could lead to computing speeds far beyond current supercomputers. This progress is already impacting sectors such as healthcare, finance, industrial automation, and even creativity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the enormous, slow vacuum tube computers like ENIAC to today\u2019s supercomputers and the horizon of quantum computing, computing has undergone a fascinating journey in just 70 years.
