From chatbots to search engines, including writing, translation, and programming tools, LLMs are transforming the way we interact with digital information. Yet despite their widespread adoption, the actual functioning of these systems remains unclear to many users.

People often assume that a language model “understands” the meaning of words in the same way humans do. In reality, the principle behind an LLM is entirely different. There is no consciousness, intuition, or semantic understanding in the traditional sense. What makes this technology remarkable is its ability to identify extremely complex statistical relationships between billions of words and sentences.

Behind every response generated by an AI assistant lies an enormous amount of computational training, deep neural networks, and mathematical models designed to predict the next piece of text with the highest possible probability. Understanding how an LLM really works means understanding one of the core pillars of today’s technological revolution.

What Is an LLM

The acronym LLM stands for Large Language Model. It is a neural network trained on massive amounts of text collected from books, websites, technical documentation, articles, forums, and many other digital sources.

The primary goal of an LLM is deceptively simple: predicting the next word in a sentence. However, when this process is scaled up using billions of parameters and enormous computational power, the model develops astonishing capabilities. It can write code, summarize documents, hold complex conversations, and even imitate different writing styles.

The real innovation lies not only in predictive text generation itself, but in the scale and depth of the neural network behind it.

The Role of Training

To become effective, an LLM must go through a long training phase. During this process, the model analyzes enormous quantities of text and learns to recognize recurring linguistic patterns.

When presented with an incomplete sentence, the system attempts to guess the missing word. If the prediction is wrong, internal parameters are adjusted through optimization algorithms that progressively reduce the error. This cycle is repeated billions of times.

Training a modern language model can require weeks or even months of computation on infrastructures powered by thousands of GPUs. The computational and energy costs are enormous, which is why the development of advanced LLMs is currently concentrated among a relatively small number of major technology companies.

Tokens: The Language of Machines

One aspect that many people overlook is that an LLM does not process words exactly as humans read them. Before text can be analyzed, it is divided into tokens, small units that may represent entire words, syllables, or even individual characters.

A sentence like “How are you today?” is transformed into a numerical sequence that the model can interpret mathematically. Each token is converted into numerical vectors called embeddings, which allow the neural network to represent semantic and contextual relationships between terms.

Thanks to embeddings, words with similar meanings are positioned close to one another within the model’s mathematical space. This mechanism enables an LLM to generate coherent and contextually relevant text.

The Transformer Architecture

Most modern LLMs are built on the Transformer architecture, introduced by Google in 2017 through the groundbreaking paper “Attention Is All You Need.” This technology radically transformed the field of language-based artificial intelligence.

At the heart of the Transformer lies the attention mechanism, which allows the model to evaluate the importance of words within a sentence. In practice, the AI can determine which terms are most relevant for understanding the overall context.

When a user submits a complex question, the system does not read the text sequentially like older language models once did. Instead, it analyzes the entire sequence simultaneously, identifying relationships even between words that are far apart.

This approach dramatically improves response quality and makes long, sophisticated conversations possible.

Why LLMs Seem Intelligent

One of the most fascinating aspects of LLMs is their apparent ability to reason. In many situations, their responses seem to come from a conscious human mind. In reality, the model does not possess genuine understanding of the content it generates.

An LLM primarily operates through statistical correlations. It has processed such an enormous quantity of examples during training that it can predict the type of response most likely to fit a given context.

This massive exposure to data creates a highly convincing illusion of intelligence. The system can imitate human language with extraordinary accuracy, but it does not truly “know” what it is saying.

This is also why LLMs can produce errors, fabricated information, or answers that sound confident while being entirely incorrect, a phenomenon commonly known as hallucination.

Fine-Tuning and Alignment

After general training, many models undergo an additional optimization phase called fine-tuning. During this stage, the system is specialized for specific tasks or aligned with desired behaviors.

Companies often rely on human reviewers to evaluate the quality of generated responses. Their feedback is then used to teach the model which behaviors are preferable.

This process, known as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback, has played a critical role in the evolution of modern conversational AI systems.

Thanks to alignment techniques, LLMs become safer, more useful, and more consistent with user expectations.

The Current Limits of Language Models

Despite their extraordinary progress, LLMs still have significant limitations. Deep logical reasoning remains fragile, especially when dealing with complex problems or ambiguous requests.

Moreover, these systems depend heavily on the data they were trained on. If the dataset contains errors, biases, or outdated information, the model will tend to reproduce them.

There is also the issue of transparency. Many modern LLMs function as true “black boxes”: even their developers often struggle to fully understand how certain conclusions are reached.

For this reason, debates surrounding regulation, reliability, and AI accountability have become central topics within both European and international technology discussions.

The Future of LLMs

Language models will likely continue evolving at an extremely rapid pace. New generations of AI systems are already integrating persistent memory, multimodal capabilities, and increasingly sophisticated reasoning mechanisms.

In the future, LLMs may become deeply integrated into enterprise software, search engines, educational systems, and productivity platforms.

The real challenge will not simply be making these systems more powerful, but also more reliable, verifiable, and transparent. The governance of artificial intelligence will therefore become one of the defining technological issues of the coming years, especially in light of increasingly strict European regulations.

Understanding how an LLM really works does not simply mean understanding an emerging technology. It means observing one of the most significant transformations in the recent history of computing.

This content was created in compliance with the transparency and traceability principles established by the European AI Act (2025).
