In recent years, this vision has moved far beyond research labs and architectural renderings, gradually becoming a tangible reality in cities of every size.

Yet behind the excitement surrounding technological innovation lies a less obvious—and perhaps more important—question: does a smart city automatically become a sustainable city? The answer is not as straightforward as it may seem. Digital technologies promise to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and make urban environments more livable, but every innovation also carries environmental, energy, and social costs that deserve careful consideration.

The sustainability of future cities will not depend solely on how much technology they deploy, but on how intelligently that technology is used. The real challenge is understanding whether digital innovation can genuinely support environmental goals or whether it risks becoming another form of consumption disguised as progress.

Looking Beyond Technology: What Makes a City Truly Smart?

For many years, the concept of a smart city was almost exclusively associated with technological innovation. IoT sensors, 5G networks, data platforms, and automation systems became the defining characteristics of modern urban development.

Today, however, the definition has evolved. A smart city is not simply a place filled with connected devices. It is an ecosystem capable of using information to improve citizens’ quality of life, optimize resources, and enhance the delivery of public services.

In other words, technology is the means rather than the end. It may seem like a subtle distinction, but it fundamentally changes how we evaluate the relationship between innovation and sustainability.

The Environmental Potential of Smart Cities

One of the most promising aspects of smart cities is their ability to reduce waste. Municipal governments can monitor energy consumption, air quality, water usage, and traffic flows in real time, allowing them to respond quickly when inefficiencies emerge.

Smart street lighting is among the most frequently cited examples. Equipped with sensors, lighting systems can automatically adjust brightness levels based on pedestrian and vehicle presence, significantly reducing energy consumption without compromising safety.

Waste management is also benefiting from digital transformation. In several European cities, smart bins communicate their fill levels to collection centers, enabling more efficient routing for waste collection vehicles and reducing transportation-related emissions.

The same principle applies to urban mobility. Advanced traffic management systems help reduce congestion and travel times, indirectly contributing to lower CO₂ emissions across metropolitan areas.

The Hidden Side of Digital Transformation

There is, however, another side of the story that often receives less attention. Digital infrastructure is far from immaterial.

Every sensor installed, every intelligent camera deployed, and every cloud-based platform requires energy, raw materials, and complex manufacturing processes. The data centers responsible for processing vast amounts of information consume significant amounts of electricity and require increasingly sophisticated cooling systems.

The environmental impact of the digital economy has become a major topic of discussion in recent years. While technology can optimize resource use, it simultaneously creates growing demand for energy and electronic components.

For this reason, the sustainability of a smart city cannot be assessed solely by examining its direct benefits. The entire lifecycle of the technologies involved—from production and deployment to disposal and recycling—must also be taken into account.

Data as a New Urban Resource

One of the most fascinating aspects of smart cities is the role that data now plays. In today’s urban environments, information is becoming a strategic resource alongside water, energy, and physical infrastructure.

By analyzing data collected across a city, public administrations can identify problems before they become visible. Water leaks, abnormal energy consumption, and emerging traffic bottlenecks can all be detected much earlier than through traditional management approaches.

This predictive capability may be one of the most sustainable features of the entire smart city model. Acting before a problem escalates often means consuming fewer resources and reducing the environmental impact of corrective interventions.

The Social Dimension of Sustainability

There is another dimension that is frequently overlooked: the social one.

A sustainable city cannot be defined solely by lower emissions or greater energy efficiency. It must also promote inclusion, accessibility, and participation.

The digitalization of public services, for example, offers enormous benefits but can also create new forms of exclusion for people with limited digital skills or restricted access to technology.

A truly sustainable smart city must therefore place people at the center of its design strategy, ensuring that innovation becomes a tool for inclusion rather than a source of inequality.

In this sense, technological sustainability and social sustainability are deeply interconnected.

Cities Experimenting with New Models

Around the world, a growing number of cities are exploring ways to combine digital innovation with environmental responsibility.

Copenhagen uses advanced monitoring systems to support cycling infrastructure and reduce dependence on private vehicles. Singapore employs extensive sensor networks to optimize energy consumption and water management. Barcelona has developed projects focused on both energy efficiency and citizen participation through digital platforms.

There is no universal model that can simply be replicated everywhere. Every city has unique economic, geographic, and social characteristics that require tailored solutions.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson emerging from these experiences is that technology works best when adapted to local needs rather than imposed through standardized approaches that may deliver limited results.

The Future May Be Smart, But Will It Be Sustainable?

The relationship between smart cities and sustainability is not automatic. Digital technologies undoubtedly have the potential to create more efficient, less polluted, and better organized urban environments. However, the mere presence of advanced technology does not guarantee positive outcomes for either the environment or society.

Much will depend on the decisions made by governments, technology providers, and citizens in the years ahead. The objective should not simply be to create increasingly technological cities, but to build cities that use technology responsibly and strategically.

Perhaps the real question is not whether smart cities will become more sustainable. The more important question is whether we can design technologies with sustainability at the core of urban decision-making. Only then will the word “smart” truly become synonymous with a better future.

[39

post-13514","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-39
["it","en

Will Smart Cities Also Be More Sustainable?
