Imagine deleting everything. No ARPANET, no TCP\/IP developed in the 1970s, no World Wide Web born at CERN. It is 2026, and someone walks into a meeting room with a PowerPoint presentation titled something like: \u201cProposal for a global network that allows any computer to communicate with any other computer.\u201d The first question would probably be: who controls it?<\/p>\n
The second would be: how do we make money from it?<\/p>\n
And that is where the thought experiment gets interesting. The Internet is not simply an old technology that we keep updating. It is the product of an era when many of the rules we now take for granted simply did not exist. If we had to build it from scratch today, we would probably end up with something very different.<\/p>\n
One of the most remarkable things about the original Internet is its openness. We do not have to prove who we are to visit a website. We can set up a server, create a page and link it to another without asking permission from a central authority.<\/p>\n
If designed today, a global network might instead be built around digital identity. Everyone could have a verified profile used to access services and probably connected to payment systems, reputation scores and age verification.<\/p>\n
It would make fraud, bots and fake accounts easier to fight. But anonymity, one of the defining elements of Internet culture, would become much harder to preserve.<\/p>\n
The early Web had one economically peculiar characteristic: huge numbers of people were creating things without knowing exactly how to monetise them.<\/p>\n
It is difficult to imagine the same innocence today.<\/p>\n
A new Internet would probably be built with payments embedded directly into its infrastructure. Articles costing a few cents, pay-per-use services, subscriptions and automatic transactions could become as ordinary as clicking a link is today.<\/p>\n
Perhaps we would have less advertising. Or perhaps we would have advertising and subscriptions. Knowing the Internet, probably the latter.<\/p>\n
The Internet was never originally designed for billions of people buying products, discussing politics, storing photographs and communicating with their banks.<\/p>\n
Many security and privacy problems were addressed later, adding new layers on top of infrastructure originally created for very different purposes.<\/p>\n
Starting today would allow us to reverse that approach: encryption, authentication and data control could be native features.<\/p>\n
Then companies, governments, advertisers and regulators would arrive. And that is when things would get complicated.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the most obvious difference would be how we search for information.<\/p>\n
The Web was built around documents, pages and links. A network designed in the age of AI might instead be organised around content and intent. Rather than knowing a website’s address or typing a search query, we could simply ask for what we need.<\/p>\n
AI would find sources, services and people for us. Websites themselves might even become secondary: behind the scenes, databases and services could be queried directly by digital assistants.<\/p>\n
Building the Internet today would allow us to correct many of its historical flaws. We could have more modern protocols, stronger security and tools designed from the start for billions of users.<\/p>\n
But we would lose something.<\/p>\n
The Internet we know is chaotic precisely because nobody designed the whole thing. Universities, companies, governments, programmers and ordinary users have been adding pieces to it for decades. It is full of old standards, unlikely solutions and technologies that should have disappeared twenty years ago.<\/p>\n
And yet, that very imperfection has helped prevent anyone from completely owning it.<\/p>\n
If the Internet were invented today, perhaps it would be faster, safer and smarter.<\/p>\n
