In 1964, Jean-Paul Sartre declined the Nobel Prize in Literature. It was not an impulsive decision: throughout his life, the French philosopher and writer had consistently refused official honors, believing that authors should remain independent from institutions. His remains one of the most famous voluntary refusals in Nobel Prize history.

A discovery made with… adhesive tape

The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for isolating graphene. What makes the story remarkable is the simplicity of the technique they used: ordinary adhesive tape was enough to separate extremely thin layers of graphite. A surprisingly inexpensive experiment that opened the door to major advances in electronics, nanotechnology, and advanced materials.

When recognition arrives decades later

The Nobel Prize has often been slow to recognize truly pioneering work. Barbara McClintock spent decades waiting for the scientific community to acknowledge the significance of her research on transposable genes. Nikola Tesla, Rosalind Franklin, and Stephen Hawking are among the best-known examples of scientists whose contributions have had an extraordinary impact on modern science. In Hawking’s case, the absence of direct experimental evidence supporting his theories prevented the Nobel Committee from honoring his work during his lifetime.
